A YEAR-END REFLECTION: AN INVENTORY OF THE YEAR THAT WAS
By Henry L. Yu, M.D.

As the year 2007 is about to end, let us try to look back and make an inventory of the things, people, places, and events in our lives the past 365 days of the year that was. Let us make a real honest-to-goodness self-examination and evaluation of ourselves that we may continue doing the good things and refrain from doing the undesirables, that we may become better persons that God has always wanted us to be. Here goes:

o How did I celebrate and start the year 2007?
o Who were the people that I made happy by the things I said and did?
o Who were the people that I have hurt through my words and actions?
o Who were the people that I had misunderstanding with?
o What are my greatest achievements?
o Which of my plans did or did not materialize?
o What were the occasions where I shared special moments with my family?
o How many trips have I made? Whereto?
o How many Sunday masses did I miss? For what reasons?
o What were the trials that came into my life? How did I deal with them?
o How many times did I get sick? From what?
o What were the pleasant surprises?
o What were the shocking news?
o What were the nice books I've read?
o What were the things I bought for myself?
o Who were the people that remembered me on my birthday?
o What promises to myself did I break?
o Who were the people I hated or disliked most?
o Who were the people who went ahead of us in the Great Beyond?
o How many times was I invited as sponsor (wedding, baptism, inauguration, etc.)?
o How many times did I help the needy? Who were they?
o What were the occasions that I got angry or lost my patience?
o Who were the people that I asked favor from?
o What were the mistakes I committed?
o What were the lessons I learned?
o Who were the people I gave my pieces of advice to?
o Who were the people who helped me?
o What were the things that really made me happy?
o What were the things that really made me sad?
o What were the good/bad things that I have done to myself?
o What were the good/bad things that I have done to others?

POSTSCRIPT TO A JUBILEE THAT WAS
By Henry L. Yu
Class 1978

The CIM Golden Jubilee was one event that was conceptualized, planned and organized for so long. But in just a wink of an eye, it's all over and done with, just like blowing bubbles in the air. Yes, gone, but never forgotten, because deep in our hearts, it was truly an affair worth remembering if only because...

Yes, the memories have been deeply imprinted in the inner recesses of our hearts and minds: That once upon a time in December of 2007, we were all there in CIM to mark a milestone and to celebrate the Golden Jubilee of a school that made us all what we are today. It was indeed an honor and privilege to be part of its history. One for the record in the years to come when we shall be old and gray.

In retrospect, here's a postcript to a jubilee that was - through songs that would most appropriately describe that one big celebration of a lifetime: The CIM Golden Jubilee. Sing with us as we remember that time in our life...

THE WAY WE WERE
Mem'ries, like the corners of my mind
Misty water-colored memories
Of the way we were
Scattered pictures,
Of the smiles we left behind
Smiles we gave to one another
For the way we were.
Can it be that it was all so simple then?
Or has time re-written every line?
If we had the chance to do it all again
Tell me, would we? could we?
Mem'ries, may be beautiful and yet
What's too painful to remember
We simply choose to forget
So it's the laughter
We will remember
Whenever we remember...
The way we were...
The way we were...

TIMES OF YOUR LIFE
Good morning, yesterday
You wake up and time has slipped away
And suddenly it's hard to find
The memories you left behind
Remember, do you remember?
The laughter and the tears
The shadows of misty yesteryears
The good times and the bad you've seen
And all the others in between
Remember, do you remember
The times of your life?
Reach out for the joy and the sorrow
Put them away in your mind
The mem'ries are time that you borrow
To spend when you get to tomorrow
Here comes the saddest part
The seasons are passing one by one
So gather moments while you may
Collect the dreams you dream today
Remember, will you remember
The times of your life?
Gather moments while you may
Collect the dreams you dream today
Remember, will you remember
The times of your life?
Do you remember, baby
Do you remember the times of your life?

THROUGH THE YEARS
I can't remember when you weren't there
When I didn't care for anyone but you
I swear we've been through everything there is
Can't imagine anything we've missed
Can't imagine anything the two of us can't do
Through the years, you've never let me down
You turned my life around, the sweetest days I've found
I've found with you
Through the years
I've never been afraid, I've loved the life we've made
And I'm so glad I've stayed, right here with you
Through the years.
I can't remember what I used to do
Who I trusted, who I listened to before
I swear you taught me everything I know
Can't imagine needing someone so
But through the years it seems to me
I need you more and more.
Through the years, through all the good and bad
I know how much we had, I've always been so glad
To be with you
Through the years.
It's better every day, you've kissed my tears away
As long as it's okay, I'll stay with you
Through the years.
Through the years, when everything went wrong
Together we were strong, I know that I belong
Right here with you
Through the years.
I never had a doubt, we'd always work things out
I've learned what life's about, by loving you
Through the years.
Through the years, you've never let me down
You've turned my life around, the sweetest days I've found
I've found with you
Through the years

PRECIOUS AND FEW
Precious and few
Are the moments we two can share.
Quiet and blue, like the sky
I'm hung over you.
And if I can't find my way back home
It just wouldn't be fair.
Precious and few are the moments we two can share.
Baby, it's you on my mind
Your love is so rare.
Being with you is a feeling
I just can't compare.
And if I can't hold you in my arms
It just wouldn't be fair.
Cause' precious and few
Are the moments we two can share.
And if I can't find my way back home
It just wouldn't be fair
Cause' precious and few
Are the moments we two can share.

WHAT NOW MY LOVE
What now my love?
Now that you've left me
How I can I live through another day?
Watching my dreams turn into ashes
And my hopes into bits of clay
What now my love?
Once I could feel
Now I am numb, I've become unreal
I walk the nite without a goal
Stripped of my heart, my soul
What now my love?
Now there is nothing
Only my last goodbye
What now my love?
Now that its over
I feel the world closing in on me
Here comes the stars tumbling round me
There's the sky where the sea should be
What now my love?
Now that you've gone
I'd be a fool to go on and on
No one would care, no one would cry
If I should live or die
What now my love?
Now there is nothing
Only my last goodbye.

FOR ALL WE KNOW
For all we know
We may never meet again
Before we go
Make this moment live again
We won't say goodbye
Until the last minute
I'll hold out my hand
And my heart will be in it
For all we know
This might only be a dream
We come and we go
Like the ripples, like the ripples in the stream
So baby, love me, love me tonight
Tomorrow was made for some
Oh, but tomorrow
But tomorrow may never, never come
For all we know
Yes, tomorrow may never, never come
For all we know.

WHEN WILL I SEE YOU AGAIN
When will I see you again?
When will we share precious moments?
Will I have to wait forever?
Or will I have to suffer and cry the whole night through?
When will I see you again?
When will our hearts beat together?
Are we in love or just friends?
Is this my beginning or is this the end?
When will I see you again?
Are we in love or just friends?
Is this my beginning or is this the end?
When will I see you again?

OTHER SONGS

TOGETHER AGAIN
TRY TO REMEMBER
OUR LOVE AFFAIR
AGAIN
TILL THEN
TROUBLE WITH HELLO IS GOODBYE
SOFTLY AS I LEAVE YOU
IT HURTS TO SAY GOODBYE
HAVE A GOOD TIME
TILL WE MEET AGAIN

CIM at 50: The Golden Diary
By Henry L. Yu, M.D.
Class 1978

For those of us who came, who saw and conquered CIM for that one moment in time as medical graduates of the Cebu Institute of Medicine, December 2-8, 2007 will be permanently etched in the inner recesses of our hearts and minds, imprinted deeply, and will be remembered for a lifetime.

It has been said that people do change, and so do things, places and events, but not the memories. In the years to come, when we shall be old and gray, I know we shall look back to this event with nostalgic undertones. Let me therefore share with you the highlights of this once-in-a-lifetime event in our lives as alumni of CIM who attended this one celebration of a lifetime: The 50th Anniversary of CIM, the very school that made us what we are today: Physicians With A Heart.

Sunday, December 2, 2007

O
Today, we are gathered at the Main Social Hall for the Thanksgiving Mass celebrated by Rev. Fr. Fidel. Alumni from different parts of the world came to attend this first activity of the weeklong grand celebration of CIM's 50th anniversary. The Main Social Hall suddenly turned into one heaven of a paradise. Thanks be to Class 1982 for making the venue for the mass befitting of one school that's celebrating "50 Years of Excellence in Medical Education". The mass proper was well organized and solemnly celebrated, although some alumni could not be controlled from their excitement of seeing and being reunited with classmates and fellow alumni while the mass was going on. "Wait ka lang dyan. Unya na ta mag-inusapay", I could hear one alumna telling her classmate. Father, forgive them for they don't know what they're doing.

O
After the mass, we had a light snack of doughnuts and juice at Room 210 followed by a motorcade participated in by students, faculty, alumni, fellow doctors from here and abroad.

O
A Coordination Meeting is held at the amphitheater at 2:00 p.m. for those joining the Physician With A Heart Medical-Surgical Mission headed by Dr. Wyben Briones (Cebu) and Dr. Dominador Ong (U.S.A.) and some other missioners.

Monday, December 3, 2007

O
It is the start of the Surgical-Medical Mission (Day 1) held at CVGH/CMSS. There is a Film Showing held at the amphitheater and is attended by the students.

O
The Medical-Surgical team and the CIM Golden Jubilee Working Committee members are treated to a fabulous soiree courtesy of Dr. Dolores Lao (Class 1964) at her manz in Vista Grande in Talisay City.

Tuesday, December 4, 2007

O
The Medical-Surgical Mission continued on its second day.

O
The CIM Alumni Fellowship Night ("Spectacular! Spectacular!" - "A Touch of Gold") proved to be truly spectacular with CIMers coming in with a touch of gold. After a sumptuous and scrumptious buffet dinner, we settled down on the theater-style-arranged seats below the stage as we were divided into five (5) groups according to decades: Group 1 (1957-1967); Group 2 (1968-1977); Group 3 (1978-1987); Group 4 (1988-1997); and Group 5 (1998-2007).

O
An Obra-Faelnar video film presentation, produced and directed by Dr. Doris Obra and Dr. Jude Faelnar, brought us back to that era somewhere in time as our gateway to the present and the future.

O
A game show ala Wowowee, hosted by Dr. Ed Cabatingan and Dr. Monina Cabral, had  groups of CIM alumni standing on stage as they answered the questions hurled by the hosts on screen.

O
The CIM Golden Jubilee Beauties are presented to an overwhelmingly excited audience: Dr. Farina Espina-Sabado (Class 1987 - Ms. CVGH); Dr. Anita Cal-Jackson (Class 1976 - Ms. CIM); Dr. Marilyn Digamon-Beltran (Class 1975 - Golden Jubilee Queen). They are serenaded Dr. Alex Montejo and Dr. Rod Penalosa who came all the way from the U.S. of A. to grace the occasion.

O
It's Day 4 of the Medical-Surgical Mission and Day 2 of the Medical World Congress. And the excitement and fun of being together again continues endlessly as if there's no tomorrow.

O
This particular morning brought in some excitements and fun as alumni came in their CIM school uniform. What a sight to behold! The young ONES and the young ONCE together. Feeling young. Looking young.

O
The memorial mass is held at the Mediterranean Room commemorating the birth anniversary of Dr. Jacinto Velez, Sr. This was followed by the 18th Dr. Jacinto Velez, Sr. Memorial Lecture delivered by Dr. Ramon Arcadio.

A Research Paper Contest is also held this afternoon at the artic Room.

O
It's Individual Class Reunion tonight. So on we go our separate ways to be with our classmates of long ago whom we haven't seen for ages - singing our songs again, dancing to the disco beats of our time, bringing back our yesteryears, reminiscing our joy, our fun and our seasons in the sun.

Friday, December 7, 2007

O
The day opened with a plenary lecture on "Integrative Medicine: Old Meets New, East Meets West" by Dr. Buenaventura Ramos, followed by another plenary lecture on "The Tools of the Trade: Cents or Sense" by Dr. Fidelis Quiza. Three (3) simultaneous symposia followed: "Screening Procedure: Is Forwarned Forearmed?" by Dr. Emma Llanto and Dr. Carlos Duyongco; "Protecting the Young, the Restless and the Rest" by Dr. Concepcion Fuller and Dr. Evelyn Alesna; "CPG: Sound Medical Practice, Or Is It?" by Dr. Albert Santos, Dr. Doris Obra, Dr. Elfleda Hernandez, Dr. Rosario Capeding.

O
Three (3) luncheon symposia are held simultaneously, sponsored  respectively by Therapharma, GSK and Eli-Lilly.

O
The last among a series of plenary lectures is that of "The Entrepreneural Doctor: When Hippocrates Meets Midas" by Dr. Jerry Pacturan, followed by a forum on "Doctor, Doctor YOU Are Sick", one that is looked forward to by everyone as it is about people like us, doctors that we are, who have been treating patients, but now have become the patients themselves. Proof that we, as doctors, are as human as our patients or anybody else, and as such we also get sick, we get old, and we will also say goodbye to this world someday whether we like it or not. Afterall, we are all but passing visitors on a limited tourist visa.

O
It's a Free Night tonight. But most of us chose to continue the fun and to make use of this rarity of being reunited with our classmates, thus the Class Reunion Part II.

Saturday, December 8, 2007

O
Today is CIM Alumni Homecoming Day. It's the day when CIM welcomes back all alumni from all over the world, hosted by the school.

O
The day starts with a Thanksgiving Mass at amphitheater 3 celebrated by Rev. Fr. Colm Meaney, followed by the blessing of the front garden (The New UST - "Under the Sambag Tree", a project of Class 1982, the Synergists), the Skills Laboratory (a joint project of Drs. Lowell & Linda Taclob, Class 1978 and Class 1981), the Memorabilia Rooms (a project of Dr. Dominador Ong and ASOCIMAI). Somebody jokingly asked "Hasta diay ang Christmas Tree blessing-ngan pud ni Father?"

O
Lunchtime saw us all gathered at the Main Social Hall to fill up our hungry stomach. So everybody feasted on the superb food on the buffet table, chika-here-chika-there, followed by the raffling of minor prizes and the major one which is the four-year CIM scholarship. The lucky winner is Dr. Roland Uy of Class 1983, next year's Silver Jubilarian.

O
That afternoon saw some of us resting at home or in their hotel room while other alumni continued with their class bonding, making use of the little time left for togetherness.

O
The Gala Night was every inch a night of glitz and glam. Everyone came in their formal wear. There was the usual chika-chika/beso-beso galore, photo shoots, speeches, awardings, etc. After the fine dining came Pilita Corrales ("Asia's Queen of Songs") as the night's entertainer belting out some old familiar tunes that brought back the feelings of being young, oozing with so much vim, vigor and vitality. At least, maski sa feelings man lang. Then the jam session princes and princesses of the '50s, the disco kings and queens of the '60s or '70s, and the perpetually avid ballroom dancers were resurrected, filling the dancing floor with their dancing shoes, exhibiting their dancing prowess non-pareil. In between dances was the raffling of the two (2) brand new cars which was won, respectively, by Dr. Alan Mejarito (#0094) of Class 1988 (Chevrolet Optra Sedan) and Dr. Fausto Tancongco, Jr. (#0358) of Class 1983 (BMW 316i).

For life is beautiful. May there be more to come.

A PLACE WE CALL HOME
By Dr. Henry L. Yu
Class 1978

One particular medical school in Cebu will be celebrating its golden anniversary or 50 years from the time of its birth in 1957. It is the very school that made me and all the rest of its graduates scattered all over the world what we are today. Yes, CIM as in Cebu Institute of Medicine.

All roads lead to CIM come December 2-8 as we come home to a place where we've been to once upon a time as struggling medical students all poised to become the doctors that we've always wanted to be. We come home to CIM and gather around for this one significant moment. This time more wise mentally and more mature physically. But in the eyes of our fellow classmates and friends we will always be the same guys and gals of decades past. Nothing has changed except that we have become better persons - as children of God, as doctors, as parents, or as senior citizens.

On this very important and significant milestone, we pay tribute to our beloved teachers for making us what we are today. This homecoming is geared towards fellowship and camaraderie among us all classmates, friends, teachers and the significant others, reunited as one big group, as we bring back our yesteryears - the five (5) decades of our joy, our fun, and our seasons in the sun, to sing and dance and laugh and chat... but most of all, to thank God Almighty for giving us the privilege of reaching this far. Oh, fifty years is 50 years, any which way we look at it.

Thank you, Lord, for the Gift of Life and Friendship. It's nice to be back to a place where we have been. To a place where we belong. To a place we call HOME.

PHYSICIAN WITH A HEART

With our CIM Golden Jubilee just an arm's stretch away, I can't help but feel my adrenaline soaring to higher level as I get more excited with each passing day about the influx of fellow alumni from all over the world, coming home to join us in this once-in-a-lifeime celebration of a very significant milestone in the history of a school that made us what we are today: Physician with a Heart. The mere thought of being reunited with classmates, schoolmates, teachers and friends, gives me that certain kind of high like no other. Meeting them again after all these years of being separated from each other brought about by time, space and distance would indeed be such a rejuvenating experience.

As I sit on my office chair today, faces and places keep flashing back as I recall yesteryears' glory, misery, triumph and victory. Indeed, each journey to the past brings forth memories of the things we did when we were struggling medical students, those hard climbs and the adventures of youth and all those that contributed in the making of a Physician with a Heart, of which all of us CIM alumni were nurtured to become. So let us all live up to that - in words and in deeds.

CIM WELCOMES HOME ALUMNI

Fifty years after its founding in 1957, the Cebu Institute of Medicine (CIM), one of the four medical schools in Cebu, has maintained its high standards of excellence in medical education as envisioned by its founders. It is classified as Level IV (the highest category based on the findings done by the Commission on Medical Education) and is recognized as one of the three Centers of Excellence for Medicine in the country. The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) granted CIM an autonomy status.

Come December 2-8, all roads lead to CIM as it celebrates its 50th anniversary (Golden Jubilee) with the theme "50 Years of Excellence in Medical Education". Alumni from both the international and domestic front will be coming home to join the rest in  this once-in-a-lifetime grand event geared towards fellowship and camaraderie among former classmates, friends, teachers and fellow alumni.

The weeklong celebration will start with a Thanksgiving Mass on December 2, followed by a motorcade around key streets of the city. Other activities include: medical-surgical missions, medical world congress, fellowship night, coronation of "Golden Jubilee Queen", the Dr. Jacinto Velez Sr. Memorial Lecture, the unveiling of the CIM Golden Book of Memories, individual class reunions, Gala Night, raffle of two cars, among others. For inquiries, email the secretariat at: cimalumni@gmail.com or call (032)-253-7413.

PREPARING FOR THE BIG EVENT

Congratulations to CIM Class 1982 (this year's Silver Jubilarians) for coming up with a great project for CIM (the landscaping of the front garden of the school where the sambag tree is). It's indeed a brilliant and practical idea, something which our class never thought of.

Talking about beautifying CIM, the school is undergoing renovations, repaintings, and overhaulings at the moment in time for the Golden Anniversary grand celebration come December 2-8. We are now in the thick of things in the preparation for this big event. See you all then.

THE JUBILARIANS OF 2007

By Henry L. Yu, M.D.
Class 1978

The eight stages of human development, according to Erik Erikson, are: (1) Infancy (2) Babyhood (3) Early Childhood (4) Late Childhood (5) Adolescence (6) Early Adulthood (7) Middle Adulthood (8) Late Adulthood.

In what stage are we now? What volume? What chapter? What page? Normally, as a human being, we're born nine months after being inside our mother's womb. We then begin life outside. We had our first two lower incissors at four months, we crawl at six months, and walk before we could blow our first birthday candle. We go to kindergarten at 6 years old and start grade one at 7. Six years in the elementary and four years in high school. A total of ten years of academic schooling. We graduate high school at 17. We then go to college and finish a four-year course which makes us 21 by the time we graduate from college. At 21, we start working. We get married at 27. We become a parent at 28. Twenty-five years after high school graduation, we celebrate our high school class silver jubilee at age 42, at which time our eldest child is 14. At the age of 52 (27 plus 25 years) we celebrate our silver wedding anniversary, with our eldest child age 24. At 55, we become lolo and lola. Yes, life is a cycle.

Celebrating a jubilee is truly a once-in-a-lifetime event. Seize the moment. Attend this special occasion and be counted. Reunite with classmates and friends. Bring back the splendor of the grass. Relive the past. Enjoy this one moment in time. But most of all, be thankful that you are still around as not everybody is given the privilege of reaching this far. Rejoice, for this is the day that the Lord has made. Thank God for the Gift of Life.

Thank you, Lord, for friends and good times together.

Welcome home. See you all come December 2-8, 2007 when CIM celebrates "50 Years of Excellence in Medical Education" and more.

REMEMBERING THE '70s

By Henry L. Yu, M.D.
Class 1978

Flashback: Summer of 1974. Thirty-three years ago. That year saw us feeling ecstatic and excited to be accepted at the Cebu Institute of Medicine (CIM) for our medicine proper, after going through all the requirements (MCAT, interview, physical exam, paying the tuition, etc.). Our first day of classes as first year medical students saw us feeling proud, eclectically anxious yet excited and thrilled to the bone. We were divided into two sections (A and B), with each section comprising a hundred, alphabetically arranged.

1974-1978. Four solid years of "living together, growing together" under the sheltering roof of CIM, a place we called home, where we toiled amidst sunshine and rain, enjoying the seasons for so many reasons, people we've been with, places we've been to, all these we remember like a song's sweet refrain.

Being a medical student in the '70s was a bit different from being one today. For one, we didn't have the hitech gadgets and amenities that the students of this Y2K generation have (computer, internet/email, cellphone, xerox, DVD, LCD, laptop, power point, white board, etc.). Ours was the didactic and traditional, theirs is the Problem-Based Learning methodology (PBL). Malling was not heard of then. No internet cafe, resto bars, virtual library, convenience store, drive thru, digital, remote control, satellite, etc. Ours was plain and simple. You don't see us loitter around Robinson's Place during break times or walk a mile to eat lunch or snack at the Fuente/Osmena Blvd area (Pizza Hut, Shakey's, McDo, Jollibee, Greenwich, KFC, Red Ribbon, or the nearby Casa Verde, Ahong's, Jo's Chicken, etc.).

During our time in the '70s, it was Black Princess, Angelica, Ric's Barbecue, La Pampanguena, Beehive, Dairy King, Shamrock, Lawiswis Kawayan, Moonwalk, Foodarama, Town & Country, Country Fair, Tropical Hut, Thrifty Mart, Rosita's Fuente, White Clouds, Rajah Hotel, Fuji Tea House, Pine Hurst, Malborough Folk House, El Tesoro, After Six, Southern Flame, Diamond Tower, Skyview, Osvel's Bowling, Cavan's, Chiquito Bazar, Paulino's, Sen Hiap Hing, White Gold, Gaw Fashion Square, Plaza Fair, Happy Emporium, Manila Restaurant, Snow Sheen, Majestic Colon, Ding How, International Rice House, Biema, Umerco, Mantaring, Plaza Independencia, Ultravistarama, Victor, Vision, Eden, Queen's Mini, Seven Arts, Rizal, Oriente, Mever, President, Premier, Majestic, etc.

And what about the songs of the '70s? Here are some of the most popular ones which I'm sure most of us would love to listen to again and again if only because they bring back the nostalgic past, the good old days of our youth, when the world was more peaceful, less polluted, traffic was not that heavy, and our ways of life were simpler in more ways than one. What, with these songs of the 70s, do you remember doing? Where were you when these songs were the hits? Here's a list of the songs of our time:
Alfie // Awitin Mo At Isasayaw Ko // Ben // Betcha By Golly Wow // Can We Just Stop And Talk A While // Can You Read My Mind? // Close To You // Endless Love // Evergreen // For All We Know // Got To Believe In Magic // Honesty // Ikaw Ang Miss Universe Ng Buhay Ko // I Love You All The Way // I Need To Be In Love // I Will Survive // I Won't Last A Day Without You // Just The Way You Are // Kung Kailangan Mo Ako // Last Dance // Let Me Try Again // Looks Like We Made It // Mahiwaga // Memories // Moment By Moment // More Than A Woman // Morning Girl // Mr. D. J. // My World Is Getting Smaller Everyday // One Day In Your Life // Only Yesterday // Precious And Few // Rainbow Connection // Rainy Days and Mondays // Ready To Take The Chance Again // Reunited // Saturday Night Fever // Scarborough Fair // Sing // Staying Alive // Tag-ulan Sa Tag-araw // Top Of The World // Torn Between Two Lovers // The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face // The Morning After // The Way We Were // This Masquerade // Through The Years // Vincent // We've Only Just Begun // When Will I See You Again // Xanadu // Yesterday Once More // You Needed Me // You've Got A Friend.....

Looking back, where have all those years gone? Who were the people that were part of our medical life? What were the things we did? The songs, the dances, the movies? And all those crazy things and not-so-crazy ones and more, all these we'll remember always for as long as we live because these are happy memories of a beautiful era, so wonderfully etched in the inner recesses of our hearts and minds. Yes, unforgettable, that's what they are.

To all members of CIM Class 1982:

I wish you all the best as you celebrate this once-in-a-lifetime event geared towards fellowship and camaraderie among all your classmates, friends, teachers and the significant others.

As you look back to your medical student days at the Cebu Institute of Medicine, the school which has made us all what we are today, give time to pause and ponder and realize that it is only in looking back that we come to appreciate and put value to what we have gone through, to what we have done, to what we have achieved, and be happy about it just because...

Be one as you bring back your yesteryears, reminiscing your joy, your fun, and your seasons in the sun, to sing your songs once again, dance, laugh, chat... But most of all, to thank God Almighty for giving you the privilege of reaching this far.

Twenty five years is 25 years, any which way you look at it. It's such a nice feeling to be with your classmates again. To be back to a place where you've been. To a place where you belong. To a place you call home. Thank God for the Gift of Life and Friendship.

Congratulations to all of you as you celebrate your Silver Jubilee. God bless you all.

Sincerely yours,

Henry L. Yu, M.D.

To all fellow CIM alumni:

Yo! It warms our hearts to know that a lot of CIM alumni are coming home to join us in this bigger-than-life celebration of our school's Golden Anniversary come December 2-8. Although we're a little sad to know that some are arriving on December 5 pa daw for one reason or the other. Just some hearty words from us: Please try to reschedule your trip in such a way that you'll be here na on December 1 so you can attend all the activities from the very beginning which is December 2 (Thanksgiving Mass and Motorcade, etc.) till December 8. In short, puslan man nga moanhi mo, why not make it on or before December 2? Whichever, we look forward to seeing you all here in the beautiful city of Cebu where CIM, the second best medical school, is.

I assure you, di gyud mo magmahay for deciding to attend this once-in-a-lifetime event. We, in the organizing committee, are putting our best feet forward to make this event truly memorable and unforgettable even long after the event shall be over. Please tell or convince your classmates and other CIM alumni to come and join us gyud. The more the merrier. Yes, "'Tis the season to be jolly. Falalalalalala. Don we now our gay apparel. Falalalalalalala...." But most of all, "this is but once in a lifetime, this is the thrill divine. Again this couldn't happen again, this is but once in a lifetime..." Remember these songs? They're just some that we're gonna sing again when we meet come December. Afterall, what is a reunion? It is a going-back to where we were once before - to sing our songs, to look back, to appreciate and put value to what we have gone through, to what we have done, to what we have achieved and be happy about it, just because... We all do love memories, don't we? As the Hallmark greeting cards jingle ad of the '70s would put it, "For no one throws away memories..."

Thank you kaayo for sending me those pictures taken during your reunion in Las Vegas. Hala oy, naabot gyud diay ang mga taga-Cebu diha nooh, sama nilang Dr. Poblete, Dr. Paradela, Evelyn Velasquez-Villamor, Gameng Palacios-Erum, etc. I also saw the pictures of Edwin and Ayen La Rosa, Gloria Lao, Jojo Macachor and Lilibeth, Camilo Gabiana, Rise Espina-Dajao, Doming Ong, etc. The others I could not vividly identify na. Must be due to the distance and time that have separated us all these years? Or probably due to the aging process or the make-up or the aesthetic procedures that they've undergone, etc.? Hehehe.

Looking at all of you in the pictures, nakaingon ko it must be a very lively, fun-filled and enjoyable event. How much more if this happens in Cebu where CIM is? Mas daghan gyud ang inyong makit-an o ma-meet (as in makighimamat) if you come home to Cebu this December. Really, it's shooting several birds with one bullet. And this doesn't happen everyday ha. Kausa ra baya gyud ta mag-celebrate og Golden Jubilee. Yup, fifty years is 50 years.

Can you imagine...
... if all of us come home to Cebu this December 2-8 for our CIM Golden Jubilee?
... meeting again our classmates, colleagues, friends, former teachers and the significant others after all these many many years?
... singing again our songs and dancing to the disco beats of our time?
... joining the motorcade og magwara-wara sa kadalanan sa Sugbo on December 2?
... joining the CIM alumni for the Fellowship Night in gold or with "A Touch of Gold"?
... yourself wearing the CIM uniform during the Dr. Jacinto Velez Memorial Lecture at Waterfront Cebu City Hotel on December 6? The "aahs and oohs", the riot and pandemonium galore?

All these and many more, we look forward with penultimate excitements as we await for your coming to the grand event of the century: The CIM 50th Anniversary Celebration.

Welcome back to CIM --- the school that made us what we are today.

Mabuhay!

Dear Fellow CIM Alumni

Greetings from the Cebu Institute of Medicine!!

It's been fifty long years since CIM was born and in celebration of the 50th anniversary of its founding,
we deemed it proper to produce a book to depict its development as one of the best medical schools in the country;
granted the Center of Excellence status by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), a testimonial to the
quality of the education and training which the school has always hoped to achieve in producing "Physicians with a Heart".
In this book, we will highlight the evolution of the school and walk the reader through the changes in the curriculum
until the present Problem-Based Learning Methodology. We also intend to recognize and honor our esteemed faculty
for their dedication and guidance of everyone who passed through its portals.

We will feature the CIM student and the student life which all of us experienced at one time or another.   So many
have walked through the corridors of our institution and are now all over the Philippines and the world.  A great number
topped the Philippine Medical Board Examinations.  This achievement has yearly been duly recognized by the Board of
Medical Education.   Many more have brought glory to CIM and to our country as leaders in their respective fields of
expertise - clinical practice, research, the academe, and government service.

We are pre-selling this book and the proceeds of the sales of this coffee table book will be added to the alumni fund for
the different projects which it has envisioned for the coming years mainly, scholarships for deserving students and
assistance for indigent patients in the CIM Service wards. The book will cost Php 1,500 for reservations done now
until September 30, 2007.  It will cost Php 2,000 thereafter.

Come December 3-8, 2007 all roads lead to CIM as we come home and gather for this significant moment. On the
occasion of CIM's Golden Anniversary, we invite you to join us in this once-in-a-lifetime event geared towards service,
fellowship and camaraderie.

Very truly yours,

From: "Dr. Henry Lim Yu" <hvty@skyinet.net>
Subject: Message for CIM alumni

To all fellow CIM alumni:

This year indeed marks a significant milestone in the history of CIM. Let us be one in this once-in-a-lifetime event of CIM - the school which has made us what we are today.

Let us support and help Tatay Tom, Nanay Thel, Tito Eng, Tita Noreen, and all the rest involved in this magnanimous task in making a legend out of a name.

For once in our life, let us leave behind good footprints of today as our legacy for those who will be left behind even if we shall no longer be around someday. Let us all be part of CIM's 50th anniversary celebration. Let us make history.

Again, we don't claim to be the best. We're simply perfect. Hehehe.

Mabuhay ang CIM!

June 29, 2007

The grand launching of the CIM Golden Anniversary last Friday (June 29) at Casino Espanol was every inch a success. It was the first of its kind. It was a gathering like no other. Truly an affair to remember. We invited the media people and gave them each a press kit. We distributed "A List of Board Placers Through the Years". We gave each a souvenir umbrella with the "CIM at 50" logo. We had a lighting ceremony of the 50 candles by assigned CIM alumni from different batches. We have the slicing of the ceremonial cake by Dr. Jacinto Velez, Jr. (CIM President), Dr. Josefina Poblete (CIM Dean), Dr. Tomas Fernandez (Overall chair of the CIM Golden Jubilee), and Dr. Pek Eng Lim (President of CIM Alumni Association). Everybody was so
jubilant and ecstatic. It was such a great celebration of bigger things to come. Afterall, that was just the launching. More to come this December.

Yo! We're all very excited to see you all around by December for the grand event. Can you imagine all of us CIM alumni in our school uniform again during the Dr. Jacinto Velez Sr. Memorial Lecture (December 6)? Yup, as written in the schedule of activities, we will be in our CIM uniform. Hehehe. We'll sure have lots of fun. Yup, as CIMers, we don't claim to be
the best. We're simply perfect!

Cheers,
Henry
